Exploring the experimental energy of an era, Toronto: Tributes + Tributaries, 1971-1989 brings together more than 100 works by 65 artists and collectives to highlight an innovative period in Toronto art history. Amidst the social and political upheavals of their time, the generation of artists that emerged in Toronto during the 1970s and 1980s pushed the boundaries of conventional painting, sculpture and photography, exploring new ways of art making, including video, installation and performance.
Intended as an evolving display, many of the works in the exhibition were rotated in January 2017.

Francis Alÿs: A Story of Negotiation.
Curated by Mexican curator and historian Cuauhtémoc Medina, and coordinated at the AGO by Kitty Scott, Carol and Morton Rapp Curator, Modern & Contemporary Art.
Creating art that is equal parts poetic, political, beautiful and absurd, Francis Alÿs (Belgian, born 1959) engages directly with urgent social issues, from the war in Afghanistan to border politics around the world. Organized in conjunction with the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City and making its only Canadian stop in Toronto, A Story of Negotiation surveys some of Alÿs's most significant projects of the last two decades.

Anthony Caro: Sculpture Laid Bare.
Curated by Kenneth Brummel, AGO's Assistant Curator, Modern Art.
Sir Anthony Caro (British, 1924-2013) revolutionized the medium of sculpture in the 1960s when he moved away from making elaborately modelled, figurative works cast in bronze, instead creating large, abstract assemblages out of prefabricated steel and aluminum elements that he installed directly on the ground. Anthony Caro: Sculpture Laid Bare honours the legacy of this titan of modernist sculpture with four of his late works.

The Artful City: Mapping Toronto's Public Art Landscape 1967-2015. In Community Gallery.

The Decades Project: 1930-1939 is the fourth in a series of installations organized by the AGO and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra designed to bring together visual art and music to reveal how artists and musicians expressed the dynamism and exhilaration of their times. This spring and summer, visitors have the opportunity to view three preparatory drawings by British painter Stanley Spencer for his mural entitled Shipbuilding on the Clyde (1940-1946) while listening to Carmina Burana (1937) by composer Carl Orff.

Sarah Letovsky focuses on the expressive nature of paint to explore ideas of subjectivity, tension, and hidden thought and feeling. Letovsky uses the painting process to create a force of opposites; her brushstrokes are at once gestural and deliberate, spontaneous and confined, bringing the figure forward with an empathetic gaze and pushing it back into abstraction with explosive colour, flat space, and restrained texture.

Shuvinai Ashoona: Curiosities. We are thrilled to be highlighting Shuvinai Ashoona's recent drawings. Leopold Plotek: No Work, Nor Device, Nor Knowledge, Nor Wisdom.

Conceived as Leopold Plotek's first survey, this exhibition spans five decades, including the debut of his most recent paintings alongside pivotal earlier canvases that establish the artist's formal investigations and his intellectual rapport with Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein and Adrian Stokes.

Born in 1948 in Moscow to Jewish parents, Plotek later moved to Warsaw with his father who became an economic attaché to the Polish Embassy in Moscow during the late Stalinist period. Living and working in Montreal since 1960, he has created a substantial body of work that has been extensively exhibited and collected, carving an essential place in Quebec's artistic history. Initially a protégé of prominent Plasticien artist Yves Gaucher, Plotek became a teacher and major influence himself, forming a new generation of artists who are at the forefront of Canadian painting today, including Allison Katz, Etienne Zack, Martin Golland and Ben Klein.

While staging a picture of Plotek's evolving subject matter and existential world-view, this exhibition foregrounds his drive to forge a studio production of unique works. The discordance of form and genre that Plotek favours and explores invests his oeuvre with a depth and complexity that defies both modernist traditions and contemporary art market pressures.

Plotek's radical, immersive works mine the territories of memory and experience, the subconscious and the intellect, the abstract and the figurative. Positioning pictorial space as a vehicle for both narrative content and emotional exploration, Plotek re-imagines architecture and objects, artists, philosophers and gods, displacing the cultural pantheon onto precarious grounds and offering poignant commentary on the current state of Western civilization, its enduring folly and persistently dark psyche.

The Power Plant's Winter 2017 season launches a year of unique programming that reflects both Canada's 150th and The Power Plant's 30th anniversary year. Consider who and what existed on the land before Canada's confederation in 1867 through the lens of artists Jonathas de Andrade, Latifa Echakhch, Maria Hupfield and Kapwani Kiwanga as each considers how their nation's history of migration, slavery and colonization has impacted its present multicultural population.

For the second iteration of the Fleck Clerestory Commission Program, Latifa Echakhch confronts visitors with a sky that is literally falling, a state of a ruin that underscores the uncertainty of the present.

This two-part exhibition presents twelve photographic portraits by American artist Dawoud Bey commemorating the victims of the 1963 Ku Klux Klan bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Alongside this artistic act of remembrance, a selection of prints from the Ryerson Image Centre's Black Star Collection of photojournalism provides historical context for the notorious bombing, recounting the political and social turmoil that placed this U.S. city, and the burgeoning American Civil Rights Movement, in the international media spotlight during the months leading up to the explosion.

The Faraway Nearby: Photographs of Canada from The New York Times Photo Archive.

Featuring photographs of Canadian subject matter from The New York Times Photo Archive, The Faraway Nearby examines a century of Canada's history and its representation in the leading American "newspaper of record." Taking an expansive view of the many stories that have shaped our national experience, the exhibition highlights images of major political events and conflicts, iconic landscapes across the nation, sports heroes, candid reportage on the lives of diverse communities, and portraits of notable Canadians. The exhibition draws from nearly 25,000 photographs preserved in The New York Times Photo Archive, known henceforth as The Rudolph P. Bratty Family Collection. This extraordinary new promised gift, made by Toronto entrepreneur Chris Bratty in honour of Canada 150, joins the renowned Black Star Collection to further establish the Ryerson Image Centre as a key international resource for the study of press photography.
The Faraway Nearby is accompanied by a heavily-illustrated book, to be distributed worldwide by Black Dog Publishing. Texts by an international team of authors explore how Canada's visual identity in the 20th century was constructed – from within and without – through the dissemination of images in this influential media outlet.

The Notman Studio 1858-1915.

This exhibition surveys the diverse production of celebrated photographer William Notman's bustling enterprise, from studio portraiture, to topographical landscapes, to genre scenes of prototypically “Canadian” pastimes. Emigrating from Scotland, Notman opened his first photography studio in Montreal in 1856 and found quick success. Expanding his business to various satellite locations, Notman employed and trained generations of photographers, studio assistants and retouchers. Together they presented a vision of Canada as energetic, young, sublimely beautiful, and deeply wintry, capturing the public's imagination in the years preceding and following Confederation.

In nearly thirty-five years of video making, Inuk director and producer Zacharias Kunuk has used art to combat the encroachment of colonialism, chronicling his culture's history while reviving and maintaining many aspects of its customs in the production of his works. In Dog Team, a new commission for the RIC's Salah J. Bachir New Media Wall, Kunuk captures a traditional way of being from a distinctly contemporary perspective – offering a unique vantage point of perseverance and resistance.

Geoffrey James: Canadian Photographs.
For the past six years Geoffrey James, one of Canada's pre-eminent photographers, has travelled the country confronting the many realities of Canadian life. Canada is glimpsed from a train window, seen at a demolition derby, or a high-school prom. The photographs bear witness to Canada's past as a dominion while also looking at the sometimes provisional way the future is being built. James's colour photographs display an uncanny wit that isolates innocent moments and seemingly banal locations, and speak volumes about our nation's precarious identity.

Exhibition – Unpredictable Patterns. Artists Nahúm Flores, Erik Jerezano and Ilyana Martínez formed Z'otz* Collective in 2004 meeting weekly to collaborate on works that incorporate drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and site-specific installations. As individual artists and as members of Z'otz* their work tackles themes of migration, displacement, transition and transformation. Their anthropological aesthetic language combines mythology with a collective imaginary helping grasp the multi-layered unpredictable complexities of contemporary life.

Brendan Fernandes: Lost Bodies.
Lost Bodies brings a world-renowned Canadian artist's work into dialogue with two of the country's most distinctive collections of African art: the Justin and Elisabeth Lang Collection of African Art at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston, Ontario and the collection of the Textile Museum of Canada. Brendan Fernandes offers multiple points of connection that draw upon traditional African textiles, costume and masks, gestures of Western ballet, and elegant, poetic dance choreographies within the museum vault, filmed in the archive of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre.
With this fresh approach to re-presenting African artifacts in formal museum displays, Fernandes reconsiders museum conventions in a set of new video, print and sculptural interventions. The artist's montage of Western classical dance and the collected object is concentrated around precise body language that raises questions about visual and discursive practices that shape understandings of African art within public collections.
On Fri 11 Nov, 7:30pm, in conjunction with the opening reception and catalogue launch, Brendan Fernandes will present a special performance of In Touch, danced by Lua Shayenne within the spaces of the exhibition.
This project is made possible by the Justin and Elisabeth Lang Foundation Fund and George Taylor Richardson Memorial Fund, Queen's University. The exhibition is curated by Sunny Kerr, and has been developed in partnership with the Textile Museum of Canada.

Kind Words Can Never Die: A Personal Collection of Victorian Needlework. Curated by Anna Richard. Kind Words Can Never Die presents the extraordinary collection built by Jane Webster (1919-2009) of Victorian needlework mottos stitched by anonymous women and girls in the mid- to late-19th century.

Katherine Knight: Portraits and Collections.

Portraits and Collections is the culmination of an ongoing project by Toronto artist Katherine Knight. Her multi-dimensional documentation of Jane Webster's highly personal textile collection (see companion exhibition: Kind Words Can Never Die: Personal Collection of Victorian Needlework) and its rural Nova Scotian setting examines the idiosyncrasies of a handicraft craze that was all the rage in Canada 150 years ago. Pine and Bamboo Ceramics specializes in fine contemporary handcrafted and hand-painted ceramics from China and Korea, offering a carefully curated collection of porcelain and stoneware studio vases and vessels, teaware and tableware from artists working in the historic ceramic centres of Jingdezhen and Longquan, as well as some remarkable modern studio works from Taiwan. Sorel Etrog: The Existentialist.
Born in Romania, Sorel Etrog immigrated to Canada in 1963 and quickly established himself as one of North America's pre-eminent sculptors. With a career spanning over 50 years and collaborations with the likes of Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, John Cage and Marshall McLuhan, Etrog developed a complex visual vocabulary which he used to express meaning in the human condition through abstract form.

Enigmatic Encaustics Exhibition.
Joya Paul and Ann Shier are encaustic artists who have complementary but different approaches to the medium of encaustic. They have been studio partners since 2008, exhibiting together in various shows in Toronto. They work out of Second Door Studio in the Distillery District where they impart their passion and knowledge of encaustic art through workshops.
Joya's work is a combination of imagery, both drawn or photo-based, with mixed media. Ann Shier produces colour fields with inspiration from Canadian Northern landscapes. Enigmatic Encaustics showcases the ethereal and dreamlike quality of this medium through two very distinct applications.

Margaret Glew – Initial Conditions – Mixed media works return to old ideas in a very literal and material way. Drawings made five years ago are torn up and repurposed as part of a new body of work. The older work becomes the impetus for a re-examination of both content and process, thus reinforcing the idea that there is no beginning and no end point.

AGYU Vitrines. Otherness (Marilyn Fernandes and Pamila Matharu). A new commission entitled Taking a Page... questions the Canadian immigrant paradigm by offering up a historiographical lesson on notions of belongingness. By “taking a page” from a discarded social science textbook entitled The People We Are: Canada's Multicultural Society (Gage, 1980), the artist collective begins a process of re-imagining immigrant-settlers' positionality by framing education as a primary tool of colonial story-telling.

Audio Out – Our listening post is now a listening bench. Darren Copeland of New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) curates the fall season featuring the work of Debashis Sinha (15 Sep – 22 Oct 2017) and Parisa Sabet (23 Oct – 3 Dec 2017).

Marlon Griffith. Symbols of Endurance includes essays by Chanzo Greenidge, Gabriel Levine, Claire Tancons, and Emelie Chhangur. The book covers the artist's massively ambitious Toronto project, Ring of Fire, with a good grounding in his previous procession-based work from all over the world. This Japanese-based, Trinidadian artist is one of the most interesting processional artists at work today, and this is the first book that looks intensively at his work.

Heather Hart: Northern Oracle.
Northern Oracle is an ambitious rooftop installation that emerges from the floor of the Gallery, and is accompanied by a series of mixed media drawings. Ken Lum: A Matter of Life and Death brings together three bodies of work by internationally established Canadian artist Ken Lum that take up the question of truth in representation, in forms that can be considered a kind of portraiture. The text-based paintings, prints, and sculptures in this exhibition reference obituaries and memorial busts – ways in which we recount, document and celebrate a life lived, but which are only produced and published upon its end. Often a simple recounting of dates, activities and people, obituaries and memorials invite questions: Is this how the deceased would have described themselves? Is this a true accounting of their stories? The viewer is invited to investigate the intersection of the fictive and the biographical, and what constitutes a representation of a life / death, through Lum's signature sly sense of humour.
Nam Phi Dang: Somewhere Else. XIT-RM Project Space. Somewhere Else is a photo essay resulting from Nam Phi Dang's recent trip to Vietnam, the country from which his parents fled years ago. With this series of dream-like yet documentary images, Dang confronts tensions felt by those raised in one country but with cultural ties to another, and explores the disconnect between the perception and reality of ideas of heritage and homeland.
Art of Words. Words of Art. Selected works from the AGM's Permanent Art Collection and the 5th Annual Ink Movement Mississauga Youth Anthology. Four participants from this year's Anthology competition were asked to engage with the AGM's collection and select a work that best reflected or spoke to their submitted piece of poetry or prose. The visual and verbal dialogues created by the four youth participants – Jordan Currie, Diya Jhuti, Abirami Sudharshan and Sonya Zhang – in this exhibition of selected PAC works by Bobs Cogill Haworth, Kim Adams, Carol Martyn and Paul Fournier, reveal that the creative mind has no limits in the connections it can make.

The Latcham Gallery is very excited to present this year's Annual Juried Art Exhibition. This event is a favourite among our gallery visitors and very much anticipated by the region's art community. A Foundation for Fifty Years: McMichael Masterworks.

The McMichael owes its existence and collection to the generosity of donors. A Foundation for Fifty Years presents some of the most significant donations made for the McMichael gallery's founding year (1966) by Signe and Robert McMichael, as well as by their peers, who wanted to gift the public with beautiful Canadian masterworks. Installed in the main gallery, this collection celebrates the works of the Group of Seven and their contemporaries. Artists on show include Tom Thomson, Lawren Harris, David Milne, and Emily Carr, to name a few. The exhibition space has been restored to its 1960s modernist style, in a manner that the McMichaels intended: traditional materials with modern lines.

Many of the wilderness landscapes depicted in artworks by Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven were interpretations serving as symbols or metaphors of place. However, writers who positioned and promoted Thomson's and the Group of Seven's work within a geographical and Canadian nation-building narrative, created a sense of authenticity while aligning their imagery with political as well as commercial interests. This exhibition presents a selection of the artists' paintings and prints depicting their renderings of the "North", including masterworks such as Mount Robson by Lawren Harris, and Byng Inlet, Georgian Bay by Tom Thomson.

In the landscape art of the Group of Seven, the viewer has been conditioned to recognize the picturesque beauty of the Canadian forest. Fierce, strong, and often unspoiled, it reflected a sense of character for a developing nation. This exhibition presents historical and contemporary art – including that of the Group and their associates – that suggests the forest is no symbol of glory; it is where beauty, mystery, fantasy, and darkness collide.

Lawren Harris: Leaps and Bounds.

The leading member of the Group of Seven, Lawren S. Harris has become one of the most recognizable figures in landscape painting in Canada. A lesser known side of Harris's story is that he spent the second half of his career as an abstract painter. This exhibition demonstrates the breadth of Harris's oeuvre using works drawn entirely from the McMichael's collection, and includes personal photographs of the painter and some of the tools and materials he used to create his masterpieces.

This selection of approximately 70 paintings takes a new Canadian perspective regarding the exciting and spiritual body of abstract work by Lawren Harris and his US counterparts. Higher States frames the iconic Canadian landscape painter and member of the Group of Seven in the larger North American context during his years in New Hampshire and New Mexico, and features an important presentation of his US contemporaries, including Georgia O'Keeffe, Arthur Dove, Emil Bisttram, and Marsden Hartley.

Music, storytelling, poetry, and dance are essential expressions of Inuit cultural identity. This series of Inuit art exhibitions is themed to sounds and activities associated with sound as manifested in the Arctic environment, Inuit songs, instrumental performances, and other aural / oral sources represented in Inuit visual art. This exhibition also includes some works on paper by Inuit women artists selected from the recent Museum of Inuit Art acquisition.

Size Matters brings together the work of painter Steve Driscoll and photographer Finn O'Hara for their first-ever exhibition at a public art gallery. These Toronto-based artists face a dichotomy familiar to many millennials: urban lifestyles combined with a love for the outdoors. The resulting images are moments of intervention on landscapes that are sharply foreign to the production and even the subject matter of the paintings themselves. Their work is a creative response to the need for a sense of scale.

The Group of Seven Guitar Project.

The Group of Seven Guitar Project explores the art of guitar making inspired by the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson. This exhibition puts the spotlight on seven masterwork guitars commissioned by the McMichael from great Canadian luthiers Jean Larrivée, Tony Duggan-Smith, George Gray, Sergei de Jonge, William "Grit" Laskin, Linda Manzer and David Wren, along with an eighth guitar dedicated to Thomson. Accompanying the extraordinary handcrafted guitars is a curated show of paintings featuring works by the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson, and a live performance film sceening in the interactive and innovative gallery space.

Morrisseau at the McMichael.

A bold and colourful journey unfolds at the McMichael with the return of the work of ground-breaking artist Norval Morrisseau. Morrisseau at the McMichael takes visitors back to the summer of 1979, when the gallery was honoured to host Morrisseau as artist-in-residence. During this time, the artist worked on sixteen commissioned works, including the masterpiece Shaman and Disciples. This exhibition is drawn entirely from the McMichael's collection, and includes works from the 1979 commission as well as intimate photos of the artist at work in the Tom Thomson Shack on the McMichael grounds.

Passion Over Reason: Tom Thomson & Joyce Wieland.

Consider this exhibition a love letter to Tom Thomson and Canada. Passion Over Reason: Tom Thomson & Joyce Wieland takes a critical approach to our fascination with Thomson and demonstrates how today's current culture of hipster fashion, as well as the cultivation of outsider creed, has confirmed what Joyce Wieland pointed to in the 1970s: Thomson is Canada.

Annie Pootoogook: Cutting Ice celebrates the strength and contemporaneity of this Canadian Inuk artist while uncovering how it influenced her peers. Alongside Pootoogook's well-known pen and coloured pencil drawings, this exhibition includes works by artists Shuvinai Ashoona, Itee Pootoogook, Jutai Toonoo, Ohotaq Mikkigak and Siassie Kenneally, showing how Annie Pootoogook made it possible to begin a different conversation that celebrates Inuit art in new ways in Canada and the world.

Together We Rise. SG celebrates Black History Month. This exhibition brings together community artists whose works reflect rich artistic content, tell the story as well as pay tribute to and celebrate the contributions of Black Canadians and the Afro-Caribbean diaspora. Featured artists include: Amira Alamary, Getachew Fantu, Georgia Fullerton, Ian Grant, Sheryl Keen, Charmaine Lurch and Sherry Prenevost.

Good on Paper: Selections from the Neville Clarke Collection. There's an acclaimed private collection of vintage early Canadian prints, drawings and watercolour paintings in our midst. Celebrated artist and collector, Neville Clarke, has collected an impressive array of historical works over recent years. This dossier exhibition will focus on outstanding works on paper. Good on Paper gives historic perspective on the diversity and rich artistic legacy of this country from pre-Confederation to the interwar period.

Paul Fournier: Worlds of Wonder. Launching the Varley Art Gallery's 2017 season is a solo exhibition by Markham-based painter Paul Fournier. With a career spanning more than 50 years, Fournier's creative production has evolved through a careful balance of spontaneity and intuition. Through expansive abstracted compositions, the artist uses painterly strokes and gestures as a means of expressing his personal observations of the natural world. These dramatic and colourful works reveal lush tropical greenery, underwater geological formations and distant celestial phenomena. Ultimately, they are a testament to Fournier's decade-long experimentation of his medium and his ongoing quest to depict the poetic and spiritual dimensions of nature.

Present | Perfect | Continuous. To celebrate the Varley Art Gallery's 20th anniversary, a year-long rotation of our most popular works by F. H. Varley is on view in the Collections Gallery. Both the exhibition and accompanying publication highlight 20 years of acquisitions, acknowledge the role of the Varley-McKay Art Foundation in the development of the collection, and many donors who have contributed to its growth. Grammatically, the "present perfect continuous" is used with actions that began in the past but that are still continuing in the present. Symbolically, it implies the passing of time, something that is not fixed but always evolving. In this view, selected interventions by contemporary artists bring new insights to the study of F. H. Varley's work from our collection.

Susana Reisman: Standardizing Nature. Paired with F. H. Varley's "Second Growth, Lynn Peak" (c. 1932-1936), Susana Reisman's photographic series Standardizing Nature explores the transformation of trees into building materials used in the construction industry. With this work, Reisman encourages us to question and understand the reasoning and decision-making behind the "shape" of things. Specifically, she is concerned for the natural resources we harness from the earth and the form, function, and role they play in our everyday lives.

On Paper. Paper is given life through the works presented in the two shows A Safe Haven: Raphael Vella and Visual Poetry: Contemporary Woodcuts. As a time honoured medium for artists, paper allows for the expression of thoughts, observations, reflections and statements. Artists Raphael Vella (Malta), Tom Hammick (United Kingdom), Donna Ibing (Burlington, ON) and Naoko Matsubara (Oakville, ON) use this medium to explore a variety of subject matter from contemporary politics to everyday life.

Serendipity: When God Gives You Lemons. Serendipity, or the happy accident, where one recognizes that the unforeseen result is as good as if not better than the expected result, has a long history in the world of ceramics. While one must be able to recognize the unforeseen, there are artists who have encouraged this result. Drawn from the Permanent Collection of the AGB, see some of the surprises that artists have found when they opened the kiln door.

A public art project in the Queen's Square lobby that includes large-scale window drawings and a banner that explore the diagrammatic relationship between gesture, instruction, and judgement. Using repetitive techniques that replicate routine, even mundane process of skill acquisition familiar to both athletics and craft, the work considers drawing's connection to other embodied rituals of practice and competition.

Twenty + Change: NEXT GENERATION Project.
Twenty + Change is an ongoing exhibition and publication series dedicated to promoting emerging designers working in architecture, landscape architecture and urban design in Canada. As the fourth edition of the series NEXT GENERATION, it presents a litmus of concerns and approaches across the country as represented by 13 emerging practices from Vancouver to St. John's.

Christopher Reid Flock: Integration / Disintegration.
As an experimental ceramic artist, Christopher Reid Flock is profoundly influenced by the significant time that he spent in Japan and the mentorship that he received from some of Canada's most respected potters. Among other accolades, Flock was the recipient of the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics in 2014. Although this ambitious exhibition includes some works from his earlier career, it features more prominently his large-scale, installation-based works that whimsically "play" with notions of function while merging rapid prototyping with classical clay process.
Companion exhibition: works by Flock's mentors Bruce Cochrane, Diane Nasr and Kayo O'Young.

The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is an art gallery and studio housed in a heritage building (c. 1891) and is Niagara Region's oldest surviving pumping station. Our mission is to engage, enrich and celebrate our diverse and growing population through the visual arts.

Early Spring '17 Group Show. The promise of spring is highlighted by a wonderful burst of creativity on display at TAG Art Gallery, from exciting and talented artists new to the scene, and from several favourites of visitors to previous exhibitions. For the Early Spring '17 Group Show, TAG Gallery is pleased to welcome Carol Basciano, Barbara-Jean Lovell, and Stephanie Loback. Clare Langan: The Winter of 13 Storms. Dublin artist Clare Langan presents film and video works created in the last two years. Her poetically evocative films have been described as being a contemporary meditation on the Romantic Landscape in its entire beautiful, haunting and melancholic splendor, as she takes us on a journey through multiple geographical locations both real and constructed, allowing us access to dreamlike visions of the potential chaos that exists in nature and in our cinematic memories. Centennial Spirit. This selection of works from the Gallery's Collection reflects the diversity of visual arts in Canada during the 1960s, the time when the Tom Thomson Art Gallery was built. TOM Talk. Sun 27 Aug 2017, 7pm: Join us for a fun TOM Talk with Phil "The Forecaster" Chadwick, presented in conjunction with the Bluewater Astronomical Society. Weather was the inspiration for much of the art of Tom Thomson. Sunday's presentation will prove that Thomson was indeed a "weatherman" through "Creative Scene Investigation". CSI is the application of meteorology as well as other forensic sciences, to creative works. The deductions are sleuthed from the details that are plainly hidden within the art. The agenda in this interactive presentation is to celebrate the genius of Tom Thomson through he weather that inspired him. All are welcome. Admission is FREE; donations are graciously accepted.

FORUM: The Golden USB Committee Dialogues. Over the course of three months, the collaborative artist duo Richard Ibghy & Marilou Lemmens conducted research and production phases of a new chapter of their ongoing project, The Golden USB. During their visits to Kingston, the artists collected "entries" for the Trade Catalogue of Everything from a diverse committee of regional artists, technicians, poets and scholars. In a public forum with the artists, select committee advisors, poet Sadiqa de Meijer, art historian Allison Morehead, artist Kevin Rodgers, physics technologist Bernard Ziomkiewicz, sociologist Mary Louise Adams, and Museum of Health Care Curator Maxine Chouinard will elaborate on their research discussions.

Canada Day Open House. Join us this Canada Day for art-making fun. We've partnered with the New Canadians Centre to join in the Multicultural Festival in Del Crary Park. In preparation for MusicFest's Jul 1 headliner Kim Mitchell, we'll be making our own string of patio lanterns on the lawn. Head to the Studio to create an artwork inspired by the iconic Canadian images in Charles Pachter's work.

Lyn Carter: 11th Line. Curated by Sarah Quinton. Organized and circulated by the Textile Museum of Canada. Titled after the rural road where artist Lyn Carter lives and works, 11th Line explores one of the most fundamental textile design elements – the stripe – and its graphic relationship to the landscape, evoking horizon lines, road grids, and furrowed fields through drawing and sculpture.

Groundwork – paintings and prints by Nicole Emond, Sonya Fesiak, Kaitlin Groat, Alison Kruse, Emma White. The Union Gallery is delighted to present Groundwork, a juried exhibition from Queen's University's 4th-year Bachelor of Fine Art candidates. Asking how we learn through art, this exhibition explores arts-based inquiry through an engagement with diverse themes and fields including psychology and environmental studies. Employing a variety of processes, the artists in Groundwork offer new ways of seeing and understanding the world around us through a practice of knowledge that is not only reflective by generative.

Jeremy Kerr's Islands and The Woods use computer technology to generate an audio installation consisting of two soundscapes that are based on memories of places from the artist's past. Each soundscape incorporates a selection of personal field and studio recordings and sounds sourced from the Internet. Islands features a plethora of bird and frog calls gathered from locations as diverse as Barbados, Hawaii, Singapore and Japan. The Woods on the other hand features many environmental sounds gathered from colder locations such as Ontario, the United Kingdom and Russia, and includes coyotes, wolves and varying wind and snow sounds. The installation offers the visitor an ever-changing sonic rendering of the two environments.

Rice Lake 18 features 300 hand-carved stone sculptures from 50 contemporary Zimbabwean artists. Featured artist Rufaro Ngoma will be present during the exhibition to discuss his work and demonstrate the art of stone carving.
