Urban Gallery presents our Apr 2017 solo exhibition, Prototype, artworks by Welland, Ontario artist Colin Nun. Colin Nun experiments with how language is depicted and how the viewer perceives language. His text-based paintings explore the idea of conveying the meaning of words, using words themselves as imagery. His carefully constructed typographic motifs are deeply rooted in graphic design, influenced by pop culture, cinema, advertising graphics and ephemera.
Colin is a Canadian-born artist living and working in his hometown of Welland, Ontario. His studies include Niagara College, Canada, from 2000 to 2002, NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2003 for his degree, and OCAD University in Toronto from 2006 to 2009. Colin has exhibited his work at several group shows in Toronto and has received awards from Creative Quarterly.

My raindrop series began on a rainy day, while I was jumping in puddles with my kids. I became mesmerized by the patterns the raindrops made. Since then, raindrops have become more and more interesting to me, a little of an obsession. Having lived by the water all my life, I love watching the shapes and reflections in the ripples of the water. Painting is just my response to that crazy love. It can be said of anything, the closer you look, the more there is to discover.

Ronald Malcolm Lambert, one of Canada's original postwar generation abstract painters, pays homage to his critically acclaimed participation as one of the 26 artists in the Canadian Abstract Exhibition that took place at Toronto's Hart House Art Gallery in late 1952. This historic show was a breakthrough for abstract art in Toronto featuring Lawren Harris, Jack Bush, Harold Town and seven other members of Painters Eleven. As the last living artist of the 26, now 89 years old, Ron has conceived an ambitious and elaborate tribute to his peers that he describes as "the best, boldest, biggest and brightest" work in his amazing 70-year career (since 1947!) as an abstract painter ... more
