Ephemera: The Searchings of an Adopted Daughter. Mixed media and stained glass by Kate Greenway. Begun as a doctoral investigation, I counter a lack of artworks about adoptees, birth mothers and adoptive mothers who have experienced the lingering effects of an earlier culture of secrecy and sealed records. In my works of paper and glass art I use my own archival ephemera, including photographs, records and letters, as documentary evidence of my – and others' – adoptive experiences, and as a literal / symbolic connection to the ephemera of adoption. The process of fusing, shattering, layering, collaging and piecing together shards of glass into a cohesive whole is another metaphor for the multiple and layered challenges that affect all touched by adoption ... more
