Peripheral VisionNew works by Sarah Gee Miller. As a collagist and painter, Sarah Gee Miller's work is largely concerned with clarity, equilibrium, and the expressive possibilities of vibrant colour. She works with collaged styrene, which is a form of plastic, to make work revealing her interest in regularity and equilibrium. Miller is largely concerned with the implications of totemic signage and the formalities of hard-edged abstraction. This form of abstraction is an interesting duality: it hides its volcanic energy behind imposed order, and is capable of great emotional variance despite a minimal vocabulary ... more

Urban Gallery presents Shifting Light, solo exhibition by Allen Shugar.
Artist statement: Colour, light, the cycles of nature (so extreme in our climate), the beauty of the human form: these are the subjects that inspire my paintings. Naturalistic representation has never much interested me. I take, rather, a transformative approach that seeks to capture a purely subjective experience, a state of mind, an evanescent thought. In this respect my work owes as much to musical and literary influences as it does to visual stimuli. My aim is to suggest the extraordinary that lies just beneath the surface of the ordinary.
Biography: Allen Shugar is a Toronto-based artist. As a teenager he attended a Saturday-morning oil-painting class that introduced him to the medium which has remained his favorite ever since. He has also worked, at various times, as a graphic designer, an illustrator and a jeweller. He is currently the curator of Urban Gallery ... more

The Look of Things: Murray Favro & Keith Shearsby engage with the idea of usefulness, of functionality, and of value. As such, they complicate the curious relationship between art objects and working instruments, between artistic expression and tools. Each sculptural object in the exhibition can be — or once was — used in a purposeful way to manipulate the physical world as we know it, yet in the gallery it exists as an art object — not to be handled, touched, or manipulated. This is precisely where some of the work's tensions lie with intrigue; though, it does more than that — it also throws uncertainty at the ways in which we perceive and manipulate the tangible world around us, both physically and visually ... more

Pushing It: Becky Welter-Nolan. Pushing It is a performative project featuring a roughly 200-lb quilted soft-sculpture "boulder" pushed uphill in true Sisyphean style. The sculpture entitled Rocky III takes a cushiony, enticing and unwieldy form that visitors are welcome to collapse gently into while it is installed in the Gallery. Documentation of recent performances in Halifax, NS will also be exhibited. Testing the body and space through physical exertion, tension, and force, the work critiques labour and the narrative of success, and navigates between endurance and futility ... more
