Power Kids. FREE. Tour the gallery and engage in art activities inspired by the current exhibitions, in these arts & crafts workshops for children ages 7-12.
15 Oct: Take Flight. The cardboard sculptures in Amalia Pica's exhibition are reconstructions of acoustic mirrors built nearly 100 years ago, between the First and Second World Wars. These mirrors were intended to detect the sound of incoming enemy aircraft. In this workshop, we will design and create our own gliding airplanes using cardboard and paint. After we construct our airplanes, we will take them outside to watch them fly! http://bit.ly/2xcFEMx.
22 Oct: Infinite Landscapes. Sammy Baloji's and Filip De Boeck's work explores the past, present and future dreams of a city's inhabitants. In this workshop, we will discuss how Baloji combines both the past and the future, the old and the new, in his photographs. Then we will transform historic images of Toronto's landscape into new futuristic scenes using plastic, paper and textiles. http://bit.ly/2jHWGwz ... more

5 Nov: DIY Camera Obscura. The camera is an important part of Sammy Baloji and Filip De Boeck's exhibition. It has the ability to freeze time and create stories. In this workshop, we will explore the origins of cameras – as far back as ancient Greece – by constructing our own camera obscuras! Like Amalia Pica, we will follow schematic drawing plans and build our cameras using cardboard, lenses and mirrors. Through this program we will learn about the components of a camera and the basic techniques of photography. http://bit.ly/2yb7Nk8.
19 Nov: Colouring Canada. Inspired by Michael Landy's drawings of logos and slogans found across Toronto's landscape, this workshop invites participants to create their own large-scale oil drawing of an icon with a corresponding work or phrase about what Canada means to them. http://bit.ly/2hhkgvw.
10 Dec: Billboards and Beyond. While photographing different urban sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sammy Baloji often finds billboard advertisements depicting cityscapes from Dubai and other recent hot spots from the Global South to which the Congo aspires. After discussing Baloji's interest in Congo's imagined future, we will design and create our own billboard complete with glowing lights. http://bit.ly/2hgl9sh.
17 Dec: Secret Ears. In this workshop we will consider the use of translation and miscommunication in Amalia Pica's exhibition, ears to speak of. We will begin with a brief discussion about language, sound and the history of secret codes. Then, we will construct our own cipher wheels using paper, watercolour and ink. You can write your own coded letters and send them to a friend. http://bit.ly/2jFKPz0.
