Unsettling. Works by Basil AlZeri, Lori Blondeau, Duorama (Paul Couillard and Ed Johnson), Terrance Houle and Lisa Myers. Curated by Bojana Videkanic. To unsettle means to disturb, unnerve, and upset, but could also mean to offer pause for thinking otherwise about an issue, or an idea. Nov 1, 2017 - Jan 27, 2018 | opening reception Sat 4 Nov, 2-5pm | curator / artist talk 3pm:
Earthlings. Works by Roger Aksadjuak, Shuvinai Ashoona, Pierre Aupilardjuk, Shary Boyle, Jessie Kenalogak, John Kurok, and Leo Napayok. Curated by Shary Boyle in collaboration with Shauna Thompson. Organized and circulated by Esker Foundation. Earthlings is an exhibition of visionary ceramic sculpture and works on paper, produced both individually and collaboratively, by seven contemporary artists. Though making work from distinct cultural and geographical positions – from Kangiqliniq / Rankin Inlet, Kinngait / Cape Dorset, Qamani'tuaq / Baker Lake, and Toronto – the artists in Earthlings share an intuitive and labour-intensive approach to materials and imagery. Otherworldly, surreal, magically figurative, and underpinned by complex narratives, the works in this exhibition are the products of a range of deeply personal practices that are informed by idiosyncratic realities and myths, real and imagined spaces, sensuality, and spirituality ... more
